They appear as small, flesh-colored bumps.<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"mb-3\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/blackheads#:~:text=Blackheads%20are%20small%20bumps%20that,%2Dthe%2Dcounter%20acne%20products.\">Blackheads<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Also known as open comedones, these are pores clogged with oil and dead skin that are open to the air. The surface looks dark because of skin pigment melanin oxidizing when exposed to air.<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"mb-3\"><strong>Papules<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; These are small, pink or red bumps that are tender to the touch. They form when excess oil, bacteria, and dead cells cause inflammation deep in the pores.<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"mb-3\"><strong>Pustules<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; These are papules with white pus at the tips. The pus consists of white blood cells, bacteria, and dead skin cells.<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"mb-3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/nodule#:~:text=Nodules%20are%20abnormal%20tissue%20growths,causes%2C%20symptoms%2C%20and%20locations.\"><strong>Nodules<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0&#8211; These are large, solid, painful lumps under the skin&#8217;s surface. They form from deeper inflammation of the hair follicle.<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"mb-3\"><strong>Cysts<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Cysts are similar to nodules but are pus-filled and can be very painful. They form deep within the skin and can cause scarring if not treated properly.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><h2>Causes of Acne<\/h2><p class=\"mb-3\">Acne develops when pores in the skin become clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. There are four main factors that contribute to acne formation:<\/p><p class=\"mb-3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/sebum#:~:text=Excess%20sebum%20production%20can%20lead,wish%20to%20contact%20a%20doctor.\"><strong>Excess sebum production<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0&#8211; The sebaceous glands in the skin produce an oily substance called sebum. Excess sebum production can cause the pores to become clogged more easily. The androgens (male hormones) present during puberty cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and produce more sebum.<\/p><p class=\"mb-3\"><strong>Follicle blockage<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Dead skin cells that are not shed properly can clump together and clog the follicle. This provides a breeding ground for bacteria.<\/p><p class=\"mb-3\"><strong>Bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes)<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; This naturally occurring skin bacteria can multiply rapidly in a blocked follicle, causing inflammation. The bacteria releases enzymes that damage the follicle wall and create an immune response.<\/p><p class=\"mb-3\"><strong>Hormones<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Androgens during puberty cause increased sebum production. Monthly hormonal fluctuations in women from the menstrual cycle also affect sebum production and cause breakouts. Oral contraceptives may improve acne in some women.<\/p><h2>Risk Factors for Acne<\/h2><p class=\"mb-3\">Acne most commonly affects teenagers and young adults going through puberty between the ages of 12 and 24. During puberty, the body produces more hormones like androgen, causing the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. This excess oil clogs pores and allows bacteria to build up, leading to pimples.<\/p><p class=\"mb-3\">Genetics and family history also play a role. If your parents had acne as teens, you&#8217;re more likely to struggle with breakouts too. Research shows that the tendency to develop acne can be inherited.<\/p><p class=\"mb-3\">High stress levels can worsen acne by increasing inflammation and altering hormone levels. Cortisol is released when stressed, which can overstimulate oil production. Studies indicate acne patients have higher cortisol levels.<\/p><p class=\"mb-3\">Smoking is associated with increased acne risk. The exact link is unclear, but chemicals from cigarette smoke may alter hormone levels and oils in the skin.
